This wasn’t very good. The first 65% was extremely boring back story that I was already able to discern from context clues in the original trilogy. I struggled to stay engaged and honestly, just wanted it to be over.
The last 45% of the book was more interesting because it involved Tobias’s feelings for Tris, but the new scenes in Four seemed impossible to reconcile with the first book. Maybe it’s just that it’s been too long since I read Divergent, but multiple times I read something happening between Tris and Tobias and thought, “Hasn’t this already happened completely differently in the first book?” It was like Roth was writing Tris and Tobias in alternate universes. Like what happened during Tris’s narration in Divergent was not what Tobias experienced at all. It was strange and unsettling.
I can see why this was written. Obviously die-hard fans wanted another taste of their OTP and since [spoilers removed] a fourth book in the series isn’t going to happen so this is all Roth could do to continue to cash in on the popularity of the books.
I get it, but Four felt totally unnecessary to me. Unless you’re a die-hard fan who can’t survive without another Tobias fix, I’d pass on this book. I’m just a casual fan and reading Four cheapened the series a little bit for me.
